How do you find time and motivation to blog? I ask because I haven’t made my personal blog (the blog you’re reading right now) a priority in quite some time, and here’s why that upsets me.
This Blog Kickstarted My Social Media Career – My Story
I created this blog seven years ago after watching a social media for law firms webinar at work. I was working for a national IP firm at the time, and social media was just arriving on the scene. The partners wanted to know more about it so the BD team started researching. Prior to that webinar, I used social media for purely personal reasons.
Something clicked in my mind after listening to Kevin O’Keefe speak. Amazingly, I was able to quit my job and start my own company a year later by combining my legal marketing and social media skills… and that journey began the very first time I hit publish.
This blog gave me confidence, taught me humility and most importantly, it brought so many amazing people into my life that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. I wouldn’t have been able to pursue this full time without this blog. I used this blog to chronicle everything I learned about social media and how it pertained to legal marketing.
I wanted the lawyers at my firm to learn how to use social media on their own by reading my posts. I wrote and edited 20,000 page computer programming technical manuals at a previous job so writing detailed how-to posts came naturally. My posts became more complex over the months because I spent 1 – 2 hours per day blogging, every day! I got up at 4am and wrote before my kids got up! I should mention that my husband passed away during this time and I’m certain this blog saved my sanity a handful of times.
To make a long story a bit shorter, I was able to quit my day job and start my own business because lawyers and law firms were hiring me to teach them about social media. It was a win-win because I was doing something I loved and I could do it from home and be with my kids.
Anyhow, I’m mildly impressed about how far south this post went – I wanted to give you a bit of backstory but you got 5 paragraphs instead! Lately, blogging has been the last thing on my mind due to client work and family life. I really miss writing which leads me to…
The Writing Challenge – Will You Join Me?
Many of my online friends are doing a podcasting challenge where they podcast each day. I’m creating this “Writing Challenge” to get back into the blogging routine and I’d love for you to join me if you’re interested. My goal is to write three posts per week and here’s my strategy.
- I’m going to keep current in my industry by reading other legal marketing blogs, social media blogs such as Social Media Today and Alltop, and by using Buzzsumo. I love writing about breaking social media news, especially when it affects lawyers!
- I’m going to schedule personal writing time into my calendar Monday – Friday and stick to it no matter what. As long as it’s in the calendar in my iPhone, I won’t miss it. I’m going to aim for 30 – 60 minutes.
- Here’s my dark little secret… I’m obsessed with all aspects of graphic design and my stock library is massive! I love pairing the perfect picture with each blog post. Building my library will inspire me to write more as well.
Sidebar: If you’re a graphic hoarder like me, how do you maintain your library? I use Macbook tags and Adobe Bridge. I also create folders in Canva which saves a lot of time. Please share your tips in the comments section!
