Online marketers love or hate Klout. It’s the perfect conversation starter at all social media events – gurus start debating – disclaimer: sometimes it gets ugly. Over 200,000 businesses you Klout to market their products and/or services.
What is Klout?
According to Wikipedia, Klout is a website and mobile app that uses various social media analytics to rank its users according to online social influence via the “Klout Score”, which is a numerical value between 1 and 100. In determining the user score, Klout measures the size of a user’s social media network and correlates the content created to measure how other users interact with that content. Users with high Klout scores are given products and services for free: preferred airplane seats, VIP access to clubs, faster customer service and even Cadillac rentals. Klout named the free giveaways Klout Perks.
Users are given Klout Perks based on what they are influential in. For example, I was given social media industry gifts because I am influential in social media. Businesses love Klout because their products are given to people who will probably review them online. And because they are influential (based on their Klout score) social media users will listen AKA purchase the product. It’s a neat concept. I was confused when Klout sent me free soap but free is my favourite price!
How do i sign up?

How to Raise Your Klout Score
Connect All Social Media Accounts to Klout
As I previously mentioned, connect all your active social media accounts to Klout. Forgetting to add your accounts will cost you. A friend of mine forgot to add a few accounts, and after she added them, her score went up 8 points!
Spend Time Engaging with Your Audience
Converse with your fans on regularly. Social media best practices include answering questions within 24 hours or less, asking your followers questions and most importantly, being genuinely interested in their lives.
How can you help your followers succeed? Can you connect them with a possible business lead? Can you share a few insider tips? Quality time is priceless in the social community.
Become BFFs with Influential Users in Your Industry
Connect with influential people in your industry. I use a social media tool called Buzzsumo to identify online heavy-hitters. Don’t start conversations immediately. Stalk them for a few weeks and get to know thier online communication style.
Here’s how to authentically engage prominent social media personalities. Flattery always works; comment on their blog posts and mention their name when you share the post online, retweet their content on a regular basis, tag them in Facebook posts, connect with them on LinkedIn and be consistent. People remember people they interact with often. It’s human nature.
Focus on One or Two Topics
Your social posts should focus on one or two subjects. Klout loves niche users and focusing on one subject will impact your score for the better. My Klout score skyrocketed because I mainly post about social media for law firms. Klout considers me influential in law and social media. I’m not a Lawyer but I know social media inside out.
Don’t Be Dull and Boring!
I love to rant and rave online and I don’t care what anyone thinks of me online, Some bloggers I know swear online – they are also the most successful bloggers I know. Remember, people love to talk about sex, drugs and money. You don’t need to spell it out in your posts but implying is fair game.
Disclaimer: If you’re dull and boring in real life, continue to do so online. Being yourself is key. Let your personality shine through, quirks and all. I told everyone how much I loved playing Wow within months of starting my first account. Don’t be afraid of controversy or going against the grain. Some of my closest online friends are people I bumped heads with initially.
Produce Original Content that can Be Easily Shared
Add social sharing buttons to your blog posts. My blood boils when I can’t share a good blog post. I have 16,000 followers; if I like your blog post, you want me to share it. People share content that stands out from the crowd. Always write about breaking industry news as soon as possible. As I’ve said many times, become the CNN of your industry!
Overall, social media users should increase their Klout score to monitor their social influence and reach their target audience. Building your Klout score takes time but it’s worth it.
