Social media is effective when you use it in conjunction with traditional marketing methods.
Having a comprehensive LinkedIn profile, writing expert blog posts, and tweeting relevant content will go to waste if you don’t follow up with offline activities such as meetings and phone calls.
How you create these offline relationships is up to you. It all depends on your personal style and what you are comfortable with. Meeting a contact for coffee might just be the next relevant step if the relationship grew authentically.
